The Great Pyramid of Giza & The Sphinx

Visiting Cairo is an unforgettable journey into a world where ancient wonders meet bustling modern life. As part of our 12 Night journey with AmaWaterways, we experienced 3 days in the bustling city of Cairo with several tours bringing us exposure to the culture and history of this magnificent city.

Included with our package was accommodations at the stunning St. Regis Cairo. Situated on the banks of the river Nile, this luxury hotel is truly breathtaking. The architecture combines Art Deco-inspired interiors with touches of Egyptian artistry, creating a sophisticated ambiance throughout. With gourmet restaurants, a decadent spa and staff that will cater to your every need, this hotel is truly one of the most amazing we've had the privilege of staying in.

The city is most famous for its awe-inspiring pyramids in Giza, including the Great Pyramid, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Here, visitors can explore these monumental structures, stand in the shadow of the Great Sphinx, and even venture inside some of the pyramids to witness the intricate passageways and chambers where pharaohs were laid to rest.

A trip to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is a must, home to one of the world's richest collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts. Highlights include the treasures of King Tutankhamun, intricate jewelery, and towering statues that showcase the craftsmanship of ancient Egypt.

Strolling through the historic Islamic Cairo district, you'll find the ancient Al-Azhar Mosque, the vibrant Khan El Khalili bazaar, and streets lined with beautiful Islamic architecture. The bazaar is an experience of its own, with its narrow alleys filled with colorful spices, handcrafted jewelry, textiles, and unique souvenirs.

For a more contemporary side of Cairo, Zamalek on Gezira Island offers chic cafes, art galleries, and leafy streets. Meanwhile, a felucca boat ride on the Nile at sunset offers a tranquil way to view the city and appreciate the beauty of the river that has been Egypt’s lifeline for millennia.

Cairo's food scene is as rich as its history, with must-try dishes like koshari (a savory mix of rice, pasta, lentils, and chickpeas), falafel, and fiteer, an Egyptian-style pastry. Cairo is a city where the ancient and modern coexist, offering visitors a unique and vibrant experience that’s filled with unforgettable sights, sounds, and flavors.
